We have all heard about complicity in the slave trade, the persecution of Galileo, and sins against the victims of the Holocaust. Everyone is familiar with the tales of cruelty associated with the Crusades and Spanish Inquisition. Most of us have been exposed to at least some of the “black legends” that Stark discusses. In this 268-page volume, Professor Rodney Stark takes aim at what many of us “know” or think we know about the history of Catholicism. That situation changes if you have read Bearing False Witness: Debunking Centuries of Anti-Catholic History by Rodney Stark. Making it even more uncomfortable, our own educations have led us to believe that our inquisitor may be right. We start looking for a way to escape without looking stupid or being forced to apologize for some long-ago pope. Our “enlightened” friend, colleague, or acquaintance cuts us off saying, “Of course, the Vatican has its own sins to repent.” Then he/she alludes to some error from the past. Some question of doctrine comes up-abortion, same-sex “marriage,” divorce and remarriage, or what have you. If you are known to be an observant Catholic, then you have had this conversation. A Review of the Book Bearing False Witness: Debunking Centuries of Anti-Catholic History by Rodney Stark (West Conshohocken, PA: Templeton Press, 2016).

As part of this revamp, called X-Men ReLoad, Chris Claremont returned to writing Uncanny X-Men. In May 2004, prompted by Grant Morrison's departure from New X-Men, Marvel felt that another revamp of the X-Men titles was required. Quesada offered Claremont the opportunity to write only one of the core X-titles (while allowing new X-writer Grant Morrison to have partial storyline input) or to write a third, new core X-Men title. He was removed from both core X-titles by Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada when his storylines fell apart due to editorial interference by the previous editor-in-chief in a failed attempt to capitalize on the first X-Men movie. Prior to this revamp, Claremont was writing both of the main X-Men titles ( Uncanny X-Men and X-Men, the latter of which became New X-Men, and then X-Men: Legacy). Volume 1 of the series originated as part of a revamp of the X-Men line of comics in 2001. The thirteenth and final issue was released in April 2013. Volume 2 of X-Treme X-Men featured a cast of X-Men characters from alternate dimensions, but led by Dazzler from the main Earth-616 universe. The first 24 issues were drawn by Salvador Larroca, and the final 22 issues were drawn by Igor Kordey. All 46 issues of the first series were written by Chris Claremont, and featured a globetrotting X-Men team led by Storm. X-Treme X-Men is the name of two comic book series published by Marvel Comics, the first from 2001 through 2004, and the second from 2012 through 2013. Low-effort book requests will be removed. Like a complicated magic spell, a Sapkowski novel is a hodge podge of fantasy, intellectual discouse and dry humour. It's easily one of the best things I've read in ages.' Sapkowski succeeds in seamlessly welding familiar ideas, unique settings and delicious twists of originality: his Beauty wants to rip the throat out of a sensitive Beast his Snow White seeks vengeance on all and sundry, his elves are embittered and vindictive. The dialogue sparkles characters morph almost imperceptibly from semi-cliche to completely original nothing is as it first seems. It's thought-provoking without being in the least dogmatic, witty without descending to farce and packed with sword fights without being derivative. It is beautifully written, full of vitality and endlessly inventive: its format, with half a dozen episodes and intervening rest periods for both the hero and the reader, allows for a huge range of characters, scenarios and action. One reviewer said: 'This book is a sheer delight. He roams the country seeking assignments, but gradually comes to realise that while some of his quarry are unremittingly vile, vicious grotesques, others are the victims of sin, evil or simple naivety. Yet he is no ordinary murderer: his targets are the multifarious monsters and vile fiends that ravage the land and attack the innocent. N his latest novel, Strasser ( Can't Get There from Here Landa Jocano defines this period of the barangay states' dominance - approximately the 14th to the 16th centuries - as the "Barangic Phase" of early Philippine history. Other barangays - most notably those in Maynila, Tondo, Panay, Pangasinan, Cebu, Bohol, Butuan, Cotabato, and Sulu - were integrated into large cosmopolitan polities. Some barangays were well-organized independent villages, consisting of thirty to a hundred households. These sociopolitical units were sometimes also referred to as barangay states, but are more properly referred to using the technical term " polity", rather than "state", so they are usually simply called "barangays", but evidence suggests a considerable degree of independence as a type of "city states" ruled by datus, rajahs and lakans and sultans. The term originally referred to both a house on land and a boat on water, containing families, friends and dependents. Richard Pevear's introduction investigates the controversy of Dumas' literary collaborators, and how important serialisation was to the book's success. However, when she actually gets her wish and finds herself among the gypsies with no way to get home, it slowly dawns on her that she perhaps acted too precipitously. One of the best illustrations of Maggie's ornery personality is when, after being told since she was young that her looks and behavior are that of a gypsy, she decides to run away and live with "her people". She is full of fiery defiance and lives for the moment, whether in her need for Tom's affection or full of bitter regret after she realizes the consequences of her actions. Maggie as a child is a beautiful character Eliot portrays the workings of her mind so truthfully and compellingly. Considered the most autobiographical of her work, it is the story of free-spirited Maggie Tulliver and her stern brother Tom.
